At Exxon, Making the Case for Oil
Monday, November 17, 2008
The New York Times -- SIX years of relentlessly rising prices have showered the oil industry with record profits even as whipsawing energy costs have left many Americans alternately furious and baffled.

Now that the roller coaster ride appears to be screeching to a halt, one corporate giant remains confident it can weather the slowdown and uncertainty better than its rivals.

“It’s not that we like lower prices, but our competitive advantage is more obvious to people in a low-price environment,” says Rex W. Tillerson, the chairman and chief executive of Exxon Mobil, the world’s largest, mightiest oil company. “But in a high-price environment, our competitive advantage has been quite evident as well.”

Folks, like it or not, BO will always show a profit. No matter what. The Dems raise taxes on them...no problem, business always passes taxes on to the consumer. Crude oil prices go up, same thing. Refinery blows up, again, the costs are passed on to us. Compared to other products, BO profit is not that much. It just seems so much because of the huge volume of petroleum products that we use. For every gallon of fuel, they average somewhere around 8 cents profit. Multiply that by the hundreds of millions of gallons of gas that are sold to consumers EVERYDAY and you will wind up with huge profits.

You smokers out there, a pack of smokes only costs 12 cents to make. How much do you pay for a pack? How much of the price is taxes? Believe me, the tobacco industry doesn't pay those taxes. You do.

Take a look at the pharmaceutical industry. Anyone ever looked at their profit margins? Tell me how a tiny little pill can cost $5 or even $10 ?

The only way a company loses money, is if income outstrips costs.

The Democrats have always been against the big companies: big oil, big pharmacy, big software, and big whatever. They wanted to punish these companies. But this is what we want now, big strong companies to keep the economy strong. What makes you believe the Democrats are going to solve this crisis? No confidence whatsoever.

Exxon has it made. It can make billions or it can do poorly. If it does poorly, the government will bail them out because they are too big to fail.

It is profit margin.

Exxon has been able to keep a pretty big one across the board.

They produce the stuff that manufacturers need to supply us.

If Exxon just produced gasoline and diesel, they would not be nearly as profitable.

Never had any doubt Exxon would be around as gas will never go so low that they won't make money.

ExxonMobil as the world's largest oil company? Publicly traded, maybe. SABIC and GAZPROM are actually larger, but they're state-owned.

If we nationalize oil companies we can ruin most of the retirement funds in America and become just like the other socialist countries.

Perhaps Exxon should invest some of their billions in profits and shore up GM or Ford so they keep building vehicles that burn their product.

Why don't they send Tillerman to get the Somali pirates off of the Saudi ship? He can kill them with b.s.! and just take the ship back.

With Quarterly profits around 2.5 - 4.5 Billion for the last few years they have quite a pile to burn thru if they need to. Don't think they put anywhere near that into R&D for oil or green energy.

Exxon is making money now, but the future of the company is grim. The cost of finding new oil is rising, contracts are getting more competitive, countries are demanding a bigger cut of the profits, etc. The key to a companies survival is growth and an Exxon is looking at a peak, not growth.

Exxon didn't raise prices, speculators did. Exxon didn't lowered prices, speculators did. Exxon just reaped the benefits since the cost of getting the oil out did not change.

thwadi said,
"Break up the oil companies like standard oil was ages ago.
It has already been proven that huge companies are not beneficial to society."

Proven by whom, thwadi? A bunch of social scientists who couldn't earn a living in the real world if their life depended on it, so they live in Academia and pollute the minds of yet another generation. Preaching their mantra that making money is GREED, oppression of the little guy, and "not beneficial to society."

So instead we have a move toward socialism, where Big Brother government provides cradle to grave goodies to more than half the population, so that their re-election is secured for the foreseeable future. And the productive members of society, including those EVIL corporations that actually produce something of value, get to pay for the drones on society. But that's OK with you, so long as you're on the receiving end.
