I agree 100%: spending money on the American farmer to grow corn instead of sending it to the Middle East is a winner every time. Price of corn is dropping quickly now we are producing so much more of it.

I remember back in the 70's when they 1st started playing with ethanol additive. It was ruff on gaskets. Would eat the carb gasket on the intake. Coarse we still ran leaded gas then.

To be honest... the ethanol doesn't come from the corn on the corn cob... It comes from the stalks, tassles and green, non edible parts of the plant... On another note... ethanol has never been truly known to improve fuel economy... Running synthetic fuels also cuts down on emissions...
The gov't tells you what THEY WANT YOU TO BELIEVE... Ethanol was a scam in the 70's and isn't much better now...

Ethanol was a nice concept, but in reality it blows.
It lowers MPGs, and causes food shortages. Better to reduce mileage and use other alternatives than this frankenfish.

OK, here are the things I would like to see put down clearly with respect to ethanol:
1) How much energy does it take to produce a gallon of the stuff?
2) How much energy can you get out for each gallon of ethanol?
3) How much ethanol can you realistically produce in a year (without starving the world)?
4) How does the quantity in 3 compare to the total demand for energy in transportation (world or US)?
Before we have a feel for these numbers, this discussion is inconsequential.
As for the Brazil is not Iran thing: thank you, I am Brazilian.
Still, if tomorrow ethanol's is today's oil, who knows what left wing Luis Inacio Lula da Silva will want to do with it?
In other words: if you want to test one's character, give them power...
And yes, corn is not an efficient way to get ethanol unless you want to stuff the pockets of American farmers with taxpayer sponsored subsidies.

Corn is not an efficient way of getting ethanol. The Brazilians have at least got one thing right: their research into their sugar canes are about 1.5 - 5 times more efficient at getting ethanol than we could ever be with corn.
At least Brazil's not Iran. Or Venezuela. Or Russia.

Though we need to look at all alternatives, ethanol has proven to be fairly ineffective. It does not actually produce that much net energy because of the energy consumption required by agriculture, transportation, and production. Plus it obviously disrupted the economics of the food industy.
If diverting corn to ethanol production screws up the supply of Jack Daniels, I'm going to be very upset.

Corn alcohol is not the answer. It is inneficient, takes too much energy to produce and drives up food prices. The only positive to it is that it keeps American farmers and ethanol plant employees working.
If we are going to subsidize this industry to create the jobs, we might as well subsidize the auto industry to maintain existing jobs.

Well the farmers here aren't subsidized for their corn......prices are down and moisture is too high so they have to dry it to store so net price is under $2.00/bushel....with high costs of fertilizer and fuel this year they lost money growing it. Don't critisize the farmer when you are shoveling another forkfull of food into your mouth. They are trying to make a living just like everyone else.
The high prices in the store come from greedy middlemen. Just like big oil.

E85 is only as cheap as the lowest price for regular in this area. No reason to use it (for cost savings) if you lose 20% of the punch per gallon.

There is not one shread of honesty in this article. This article was no doubt concocted by big oil advocates who does not want any competition from any alternative fuel.
They keep referring to studies, but they surely do not name them.
