Pirates hijack Saudi-owned oil tanker with 25 crew aboard
Monday, November 17, 2008
The National Post -- Pirates have seized a Saudi-owned supertanker fully laden with oil off east Africa, capturing the biggest vessel yet in a shipping zone where Somali pirates strike almost daily, the U.S. navy said.

Saudi-owned television station Al Arabyia said the Sirius Star had been freed, citing an unnamed official Saudi source, but the U.S. navy and Saudi Aramco, which owns the supertanker, both said they had no knowledge of any release.

The hijacking of the vessel will add to pressure for concerted international action to tackle the threat posed by pirates from anarchic Somalia to one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

Blast them out of the water. Every dead pirate is one more out of business. make it so expensive that it becomes a poor business model.

"Iranian ship has been released. Word is it was a dirty bomb planned for Isreal."

16 pirates died after handling substance on captured Iranian ship

No one ever said the pirates were smart.

Pirates have been a major problem for years.
There are many parts of the word where this is a very bad problem, along with Somali there is Indonesia, Singapore, Nigeria, and India.
Because of liability issues, the crew cannot do anything until they are 'ON' the deck of the ship - which is ridiculous. And, they are in international waters when this usually happens!
The pirates maybe had RPG's to make the ship stop and then are able to be boarded.
The affected countries need to patrol these areas and make all of the shipping areas safe. A more aggressive nature is needed to blast those idiots out of the water.
And, it’s not just tanker ships but cruise ships have had their problems as well.

those tankers are the modern day version of spanish gallions. it was just a matter of time. I'm not sure why they don't rate an escort through such areas

OK, they only asked for $1,000,000.00 US.

Somalia
$1 USD = 35,000 Shillings

Not even a recent rash of high-stakes, high-seas hijacks have been able to revive Somalia's stunted and shrinking economy.
The shilling has been Somalia's official currency since 1962 and has been declining in value steadily since the government breakdown in 1991, when it was valued at about 2,000 Somali shillings to $1 USD.

So in asking for the 1 million they get $35,000,000,000.00 Schillings.
The #2 worst currency in the world.
I just might laugh. If it wasn't so pathetic.

Ahh what the Heck I'll laugh anyway. Hahahahahahahaaaaa.

I don't see why the world allows a 4th or 5th rate country like Somalia get away with this. Go in and level the entire country. It isn't as though we'd be losing anything if it disappeared. If you need another reason to do it, remember them dragging the body of the dead US serviceman through the streets...

I would think that Saudi Arabia and the other big oil producers would react to this with support from any Naval presence they have, as well as diplomatic envoys to the country.
Yes it is a rogue country, and all, but something like this threatens their main source of power, and they should extend their dominance over the region and the shipping lanes from their ports.

well at least if opec employees are stealing tankers - thats a better reason to raise prices than, well there was a wind gust off the African coast yesterday and it might turn into a hurricane and it might destroy all the refineries in the Gulf.

We really need to do something about these Somali pirates. Send in the Marines in an unfettered and defined mission. We defeated the Barbary pirates 200 years ago. I don't see why America can't or won't trounce these thugs, too.

Do they all wear patches over one eye? Do they say Aaarrggghhh mate? No they don't all wear patches over one eye, Some aren't that lucky and don't have patches or are really unlucky and they have them over both. The really lucky pirates still have both eyes intact.
Also, in response to the second part of your comment, these are Somalian Pirates, Australian ones Say Aaaaargh Mate. It's also followed by an offer of marzapan or Vegemite.
Oh and Vegemite is one of several yeast extract spreads sold in Australia. Just figured i'd save some time looking for an description of Vegemite.

If they would operate with a zero tolerance and shoot to kill with these pirates they might start thinking twice about hijacking anything. Instead we bargain with them for nearly a month like the last ship that had military tanks that were questionable anyways.
